Western Digital My Book 500 GB
by Marcus on November 1, 2006
A new piece of hardware! I already have an external harddrive, a Maxtor Onetouch II 250 GB, unfortunately it suddenly broke down (sadly a few weeks after recommending it to Niclas). I can still access the files through file recovery programs, but it’s not of much use when I can’t add new data to it. Therefore, I’ve now ordered a new harddrive, a Western Digital My Book Premium Edition, with a memory capacity of 500 GB, hopefully I can recover the files from the Onetouch II, and format it, so it’s useable again. Naturally I’m pretty psyched about this new one, it looks incredible, and 500 GB should be more than enough. Also, the inner blue light on the front is a capacity gauge, it shows you how much space is free on the disk, pretty cool gimmick. Oh yes, it costs 2,000 DKK, bought from shg.dk.
Some specifications and photos:
Rotational Speed: 7,200 RPM
Read Seek Time: 8.9 ms

Serial Transfer Rate: USB 2.0 and FireWire 400
Dimensions: 172.2 mm (height) x 143 mm (length) x 56.7 mm (width)
Weight: 1.32 kg

It cannot be stressed immensely enough, how much Maxtor’s Onetouch hard drives suck – and how criminally useless their so-called customer service is.
“Just format it if you experience any problems”… Gee, thanks.

But why ? 500GB external ? Internal is faster and cheaper ? :S

In my case, I only have a laptop – the 3-8 yr. old stationary computer doesn’t do me much good – so the choice was always obvious to me.

Just realized I’ve filled it up! Appr. 200 MB free space, I really need to delete some warez.
