Why I hate Star Wars ep. 2 & 3 – Part 1
by Marcus on April 18, 2007

One day more than 10 years ago my dad brought home three brand new, blue VHS covers, they featured astonishing artwork and soon there after I was introduced to the incredible saga that is Star Wars, a series of masterpieces way ahead of their time. In 1999 George Lucas released a new episode: The Phantom Menace, a decent movie, but never the less, from this point on he steadily started buttfucking the classics we enjoyed as kids (I rock at analogies!). In my opinion Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, in their current state, should never have been created, and I’ll try to explain why.
Humor
There was some funny moments in the original movies, especially between R2-D2 and C-3PO, and it fitted nicely into the films. In the newest two movies it’s different, almost all droids are made out to be funny. The standard battle droids look funny, they have weird voices and say ridiculous things like “Uh-oh!” and “Roger, roger!”, which means you never see them as a threat, like you did with the stormtroopers, even though they were stupid and couldn’t hit anything, they were at least somewhat threatening. Now, let’s get back to our blue and golden friends. I particulary remember two scenes from the new movies, the first one is C-3PO accidently having his head mounted on one of the battle droids, he then runs around apologizing while his body shoots at stuff. Not only does it seem extremely unrealistic that his head just so happens to be placed at the body, it’s also just a ridiculous scene. Make the humor subtle, don’t push it into peoples’ faces like it’s some sort of second-rated Adam Sandler flick, it’s Star Wars for fuck’s sake. The second scene is even worse, the beginning of episode 3, R2-D2 is battling two of the big, black battle droids, as far as I remember he squirts oil at them, they slip in it, and he lights them on fire. The scene is full of the mentioned ridiculous punch lines. This lame humor is probably the biggest reason why I dislike these movies, it just doesn’t fit in.
CGI
The first movies were revolutionary when it comes to special effects, since CGI kinda sucked back then spaceships were created as miniature models, all the environments, it being space battles or dusty outskirts of strange planets, it looked astonishing. There was a time period before CGI became good enough to portray city environments, characters up close, etc. when, even in low-budget movies, everything had to be built, which made the sets of many of these sucky movies look pretty incredible. Today CGI is used in almost all movies, you can more or less create everything with it. I know it’s not easy to create these realistic scenes, but it still seems a bit like seeling out when you use CGI in abundance, I’m more impressed when they actually build the sets from scratch, like they did in Lord of the Rings. Another reason for disliking the new movies; almost every single fucking scene is created with CGI, even though it would be possible to build the stage. For example; in episode 3, every single clone trooper is created with CGI, not a single real combat suit was used, that is fucking sad.
Well, that’s all for now, I’ll think of some more to bash later. ;) What do you think of Star Wars episode 2 and 3?

I don’t agree on what you think of being lame humor in the newer movies. Yeah it’s unrealistic but hell it’s still fun with the whole C-3PO getting his head mounted on one of the battle droids. At least I think it’s fun and so did the other people in the cinema when I saw the movie.
I do think that CGI has gotten overused, but every damn movie does that nowadays. It’s sad, but it all really just comes down to money, and CGI is way cheaper than building scenes.

Agree with most of it.
But how about Phantom Menace? That was the worst of them.
And CGI isn’t cheap at all. Superman Returns’ budget was 280 million dollars. I know Kevin Spacey is an expensive actor, but not THAT expensive.

Just saying that it’s cheaper than making scene. That’s what I’ve heard.

@ Kasper
I laughed at some scenes as well, but this kind of humor shouldn’t be in a Star Wars movie imo, it’s a cheap way to make the audience laugh.
Also, as I mentioned they could’ve used CGI in many scenes for Lord of the Rings, but didn’t.

I actually can’t remember much from the Phantom Menace, maybe I should watch it again. I remember Anakin being a pain in the ass though. Oh yeah, that’s also the movie in which they suddenly made the force way less cooler because of the midichlorians, the idea that you can measure how powerful someone is with the force, by taking a blood test is fucked up… I actually do hate that movie too. :-/ Darth Maul was damn cool though.

The first thing I noticed about Star wars episode 3 was the humor. Really, I had never really thought star wars was funny (nor should it be) and it really made a difference :/.

Well I totally agree with you. They should have used real scenes but I still think it just comes down to how much money they are willing to spend. And as I’ve alright said, it’s cheaper to make CGI than making scenes (from what I’ve heard).

Well, some scenes could’ve been made as miniatures, once again, like they did in LotR, that probably doesn’t cost much. IMO it also affects the performances, well in that case it probably wouldn’t have helped with real scenes anyway, since George Lucas is a douchebag.
Anyway, money shouldn’t be a factor when your name is George Lucas.

I guess you’re right :P

Darth Maul was really cool. They should have kept him in Episode 2 and 3. He was the best thing about the new star wars movies. It would’ve been awesome if was the visible enemy in Episode 1,2 and 3, like Darth Vader was in 4,5,6. Then he could’ve been killed in Episode 3, because there was NO POINT in his death in episode 1.

By the way Marcus, your blog is really slow. Maybe you should be looking for a new host :P?

Yeah, also, that General Grievous guy was pretty pointless (especially because he was injured, he fucking ruled all jedis in the Clone Wars cartoons).
@ Kasper
I’ve noticed, it’s hopefully temporary.

Agree on the humor thing. The new humor: jar jar bings, the stupid roobots, the enemy (the viceroy for example) and so on. they are so god damn lame! hate em.
I don’t agree on the CGI. especially the 3′rd star wars is really cool. there are so many beautifull sequenses. for example when the jedies get killed! a thing of beauty.
I think both Grievous and darth maul are cool, but there should only bee one of them. They both just die in each their episode… pointless.. Oh by the way: Christoffer lee?? he’s the lamest charakter ever, because he isn’t a charakter. He just talks alot, and then he dies.
by Morten on 20th Apr at 21:51. #
He’s not a character, he’s an actor. Count Dooku (or however they spelled it) was his character.
The jedi getting killed was stupid and lame as hell. They totally nerfed the jedi in that movie. In the original star wars movie they say that Darth Vader hunted down and killed the jedis, and it took time. In Episode 3 it looks like they all got killed in like a day or something. And by effin stormtroopers. Jaysis.

@ Morten
I’m not saying they shouldn’t use CGI, a lot of the scene are incredible and couldn’t have been created without CGI, it’s just the ridiculous abundance of CGI that pisses me off. For example, as mentioned, the fact that all clone troopers in episode 3 are animated.
@ polt
I agree, it’s retarded.

Hayden Christesen is a fucking wuss boy.
Haven’t read it all, but I’m probably going to agree with you. I just wanted to say that as far as I remember, he’s about the worst fucking actor I have EVER seen in a movie.
Well, most of Episode II just sucks, really. Haven’t seen the third.
by EKR on 21st Apr at 20:53. #
Yeah, he’s not exactly Oscar-material. It’s not only his fault though, George Lucas makes everyone act like crap.
by Marcus on 21st Apr at 22:04. #
Maybe it’s all the bluescreen? Hayden said he didn’t think he’d been on more than one set where there wasn’t any bluescreen. Might make it hard for the actors to get into the movie, huh?
What do I know… it should be obvious that most of the actors could play a lot better than they did in Episode II.
And I also hated the voice of Yoda!
by EKR on 22nd Apr at 14:13. #
It was the same dude who did the voice for Yoda in all the movies. Frank Oz.
Regarding the acting I blade Lucas. I’ve seen Portman do wonderful acting, I’ve heard that Hayden has done well in other movies. I really think he’s a bad director.
Although I do actually think that Hayden pulled of the bad guy look in Revenge of the Sith.
by polt on 22nd Apr at 21:41. #
Yes, Portman is incredible in almost all her movies; Leon, V for Vendetta, Closer. MacGregor is usually great as well (Trainspotting, Big Fish), and I actually think he performs okay in the Star Wars movies, compared to the other actors anyway. George Lucas didn’t even direct Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, too bad he wanted to direct the new ones.
I just remembered something, Lucas mentioned in an interview that if they had several takes of one scene and the actors didn’t perform well in the same take, but in different takes, they would just cut the two takes together. That seems so sloppy to me, and I can’t help thinking that’s one of the reasons why some scenes and dialogues just don’t work.
by Marcus on 22nd Apr at 22:30. #
Oh dude, you don’t mention Portman movies and not mention Garden State.
by polt on 23rd Apr at 14:25. #
Haven’t seen that one. >_<

Dude, do it.
