Apocalypto

I really like Mel Gibson's work, he's one of my favorite actors and Braveheart is one of my favorite movies. Naturally I've been looking forward to Apocalypto, and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed. It's a great movie with a fascinating story, it has both incredible emotion-filled and action-packed scenes, good actors, and some nice twists. I didn't really like Passion of the Christ, so it was nice to find out that he's still able to make great movies.
Apocalypto: 8/10.

PotC: At World’s End

Even though I enjoyed the first two movies they don't exactly rank high on my list of the best movies. I feel more or less the same about the third one. It's a lot more confusing, it has A LOT of stories, the break in the middle of the movie (in the cinema) was well needed, so I could get my thoughts together and figure things out. Also, some of the stories have disappointing endings, like the Davy Jones/Calypso, I wanted to see her mess things up, instead she just created a maelstrom that wasn't much of a threat.
Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will never be my favorite actors, they do a poor job, also because they're not really believable as real pirates. It's an entire different thing with Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Ben Nighy though, all incredible actors, especially Nighy, who is one of my favorites. Sparrow is probably Depp's best role ever. Chow Yun Fat is so cool too, he's a ninja pirate for god's sake! Too bad there was no proper sword fights with him.
The CGI, mainly Jones' tentacle-beard is the most realistic looking digital special effects I have ever seen. There are especially two scenes that are awe-inspiring, first is Jones grapping a tear from his eye with a tentacle, second is the rain pouring down on his face. Just amazing. Too bad there was no scenes with the Kraken running amok.
The ending was all right, Will becoming captain of the Flying Dutchman was a cool idea, although he looks more like an Italian model than a pirate. At least it wasn't a typical sugar-sweet ending. Sparrow going after a new trasure was neat as well, would've liked to see Jones and Calypso making up, or at least confronting each other too.
Decent flick, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: 6/10.

Lost Season 3

Spoilers ahead. The best tv-show in the world at the moment, Lost, had its third season finale yesterday with two episodes. I watched them this morning but I still can't stop thinking about them. They exceeded all my expectations, and they are some of the best episodes of the entire show. Jack beating Ben was quite satisfying, Charlie dying was sad, but seemed inevitable, the video chat with Penelope, and the surprise that Naomi probably hasn't got anything to do with her, was a nice little twist, but the most amazing part of the final was, of course, the flash-forward of Jack being a miserable bum, an unknown period of time after they've left the island. That part makes me look forward to the next season alot more than I thought I would. It wouldn't surprise me if we'll see flash-forwards for most characters in the next season, and then see what happens after the flashes in the fifth season. Oh yeah, I'd also really like to see Locke team up with Jacob. Lost Season 3: 10/10.

Two major inconsistencies:
There was one line in time, it originally went something like this (chronologically): Doug is revived at hospital, drives ambulance to Carroll, smashes through house, gets shot, saves Claire, goes to her house, she answers Beth, he moves magnets around on refrigerator (‘u can save her’), she tends his wounds, leaving the bloody gaze there. Now, he can’t have stopped the ferry from exploding, since this is the same line in time as we see in the present, because all of these things mentioned is there in the present, and therefore him stopping the ferry from exploding would also be there in the present. If there was more branches, there still wouldn’t be magnets and so on in the present, since they would be on a different branch in the time/space continuum (the one where the ferry doesn’t explode), which Doug would’ve created when going back into time and started changing significant things.
And the second one: He can’t possibly go back in time and prevent the ferry from blowing up, since, if it hasn’t blown up, why would he have any reason to go back in time? There’s one way to make this work, like they talked about, if he had created a new branch in time, a parellel universe, where the only change is the addition of him, which means there’ll be two of him, not connected. But they make that theory impossible from the first inconsistency, where some things have been changed in the past, and other things haven’t, which proves it’s not a different branch in time. The ferry blows up, but the magnets, ambulance and so on is also in the present, which means he must’ve done some of the things in the past, but not all, which doesn’t make sense since we know he saved Claire and the ferry in the past.
What I’m getting at is this: If the last part of the movie was a different branch in time we wouldn’t have seen stuff he changed in this branch, in the original branch, the present.
Just had to get that off my chest before I forgot it, I’ll write some more tomorrow. The movie went from a potentiel 7 or 8 out of 10 to a 6/10. Too bad.
Ring of Death – Day 5

UPS picked up the console today, which means I should have it back before the 12th of June, so I’ll probably miss the Halo 3 beta. Do I feel stupid about buying Crackdown now? Yup.
